EASY COME...EASY GO...NEED ADVICE...

Seriously, talk about high-highs, and low-lows.

Here I was all super excited about my new laptop. I transferred all my documents (think books, chapters, proposals), and downloaded software, and changed settings.

Lo and behold, in the late afternoon after spending scads of time fine-tuning/tweaking/setting, I put in the CD to download the software for my camcorder, and the laptop started to wheeze. And sputter. (For the record, sputtering is not a good sign.) I hit the eject button, and...

...nothing.

Multiple times I hit the eject button, and Dell refused to give it up. You see, it's a little touch pad thingy, and not an actual mechanical eject.

Sorry to say, I had to take it into the Geek Squad, and even the neighborhood geeks could do nothing. Thankfully, Best Buy was super awesome about ordering me a new laptop since mine went kaput. Until it arrives, I stole my daughter's.

Here's my dilemma:  I'm terrified that the same thing is going to happen with the new one, and naturally it could/would happen after the warranty expires. Should I stick with Dell Studio 17, or move on to something else? I loathe spending more money, as you all know, but I might have to in order to get something I feel comfortable using for the next several years.

What do you own/recommend? Why/why not? Need advice!!!!

Oh no! Wheezing is BAD!, Sputtering is WORSE!

I've never had an ounce of trouble with any of my Dell computers.

I hope you get things ironed out soon. :(

Argh! Sorry about the computer trouble. I'm on my second Toshiba. My first one is still working, just upgraded to a newer model. They are very reliable. This Buffaloe gives them two hoofs up!

YIKES! Not fun! I've got a Dell Vostro 1000 for over a year now. Only trouble I've had is with the power cord, but Dell was great in replacing it, of course it was under warranty. Oh, and my computer doesn't have vista, that's one thing my hubby was looking for when he bought it. Hope you get it all worked out!

So sorry to hear this. That really is discouraging, but remember that every brand will have a few duds.

I use an ACER, and it's been fine, but I know that soooooo many have been awful. I got lucky with this one.

Good luck with making your decision and finding the right laptop for you.

My first laptop was an Everex. It was constantly giving us problems but we stuck it out because we're cheap. But, it was in the trunk of the car when we wrecked in November and it didn't make it. The insurance company sent us a check to replace it (yay for full coverage!) and we just added a little more to that and got an HP. I LOVE it! Granted I've only had it a short time, I haven't had a single problem out of it.

Georgiana, we got a Compaq Presario CQ60 in February after our other one died. We got this one because it was on sale and did everything we wanted. So far so good.
