DATES
It's official, I'm an old fuddy duddy. The sad thing is, nowadays I can't even remember what it was like to be young and dating.
This is not good for someone who's trying to write romance!
Here's my dilemma--I have heros and heroines meeting at work and at places where they may share a mutual interest, but when it comes to their actual first date, where do I take them? To dinner. {insert snore}
LOL!!! It was all fine and dandy the first few books, but now I'm starting to think I have a hang-up. You see, almost every date I've been on--before I was old and married, mind you--involved a restaurant. The first time I went out with my (now) hubby, he picked me up in a Land Cruiser and we went to a place that serves fish tacos. In fact, we've had way more fun on dates later in the relationship (sporting events and such), and after getting married.
Now that I've recognized this pattern in my stories, I know I need to dig deeper into my characters to see what creative things they'd do--perhaps something that doesn't involve a restaurant?
To start my creative juices flowing, tell me about your favorite first date! But if that favorite first date wasn't with your hubby, tell me about your "friend's" favorite first date. Hee hee, we'll keep it here amongst friends ;-)

We went to an outdoor music concert at Ontario Place.
For other date ideas, what about mini golf, movies, Christmas tree hunting if the story is based around Christmas. Shopping--that's a good one if one loves it and the other doesn't.
I love thinking of weird first dates, they can really define a character! Even restaurant ones can do that if you chose a quirky restaurant. LOL
My VERY first date involved the a taxi ride to see Ghost Busters and then to a restaurant...er...McDonald's. But, then again, you're not writing a preteen romance are you?
How about a hay ride in the fall, or the fair. Your heroine can eat too much and get sick on a roller coaster, or... to the circus, or mountain biking (sooo romantic) or a hot air balloon ride (actually did this but not on an official date...)
My first date with Himself was to see a movie. The actual asking for the date was more memorable. Email me if you want to hear the story.

I've only ever been on one first date...we went to the Plaza in Kansas City to see the Christmas Lights.
It was really cold, so we had hot chocolate at McDonalds.
What can I say? We were broke college students...and as of today, we've been married 20 years!
Eileen--I LOVE the idea of mini golf, so much that I used it in one of my books. LOL--great minds!
Gina, I may have to use the hot air balloon in one, but I'm too chicken to do the research!
CJ, thank you for sharing your story with me. What a way to start a romance:-)
Erica, I'm totally jealous! Only one first date and it worked out perfectly? So not fair ;)
When my hubby and I started dating we lived in Michigan. Fall up North is absolutely breathtaking. We went to a cider mill and sat outside on the cool grass sipping fresh cider and warm donuts. Very romantic! I can still see that moment in my head like it was yesterday.
Don't forget bowling alleys!
If you are a fuddy duddy, what am I?????
LOVEEE your posts!
Let's see. Sigh. Okay. Another secret. The year was 1973. My hubby was my softball instructor at Baylor. Yes.
We had our first "date" about two months before the class ended.
Think steak house. Drive around Lake Waco. Romantic kiss.
We just celebrated our 32nd!
