YEARS SPENT IN RETAIL...
....kinda ruined my enjoyment of "Christmas" music. I use the quote marks because what they played in the store on the endless looped recording was a compilation of Frosty the Snowman, Rudolph, Jingle Bells, etc. You can only roast your chestnuts on the open fire so many times.
{insert group groan}
But true Christmas songs--those are the ones I love. My favorite this year may not even be classified as Christmas, but I still think it qualifies: Mary Did You Know. This line brings tears to my eyes:
Did you know
that your Baby Boy has walked where angels trod?
When you kiss your little Baby you kissed the face of God?

Love these kinds of songs! Holy Night will get me every time too. Hey, Casting Crowns has a new Christmas CD out and you'd like it, its not the cutesy songs but the great, more serious ones including a few of their own written music. One is named Christmas Offerings and its beautiful.
Breath of Heaven sung by Amy Grant...that one always gets me.
I love O Holy Night and O Come O Come Emmanuel. Another song that always makes me cry is that one where the boy wants the shoes for his mom...so she can wear them if she meets Jesus that night...
Great songs! I have to admit, some of the ones you ladies mentioned make me misty-eyed too. I love songs where I can chew on the words and worship.
"Mary's Song" by Kelly Price. It's amazing! I cry every time!
Jill, I just looked up the lyrics, and wow. What a reminder how precious it must have been to hold baby Jesus and love on Him.
Georgiana, I remember the first time I heard "Mary, Did You Know?"
It shivered my spine...and still does...as I read the prophecies of what poor Mary knew she had to face...
I actually used this phrase today, Georgiana, on my Facebook ART BITE. Check it out...and stop by my blog! Love your comments!

Oh, I heard this one on the radio today and just paused to enjoy it. It always makes me wonder how Mary managed. Knowing what was to come must have been so difficult for her.
Still love this song!
Truly! It's hard enough to know our children will face certain challenges, but I can't even fathom that magnitude.
This song just reaches into my heart and warms it. Oh the beautiful words and the message!
I think "Mary, Did You Know" as sung by Mark Lowry is my favorite. Those lyrics get to me also.
When asked this question, I've chosen one in three different categories because I can't pick only one. So "Mary, Did You Know" would be my vocal favorite. Choral would be the "Hallelujah Chorus" and instrumental is absolutely anything by Mannheim Steamroller.
Hi Carole! I agree-it's not Christmas without Mannheim Steamroller!
