BACK TO THE BASICS

Notebooks. Lined, unlined, graph. Large, medium, pocket. As many of you already know, I have a longstanding love affair with office products, especially paper. For the last few years I've written only on the laptop, as I can type WAY faster than I can write by hand. But when I first began writing seriously, I still did it the old-fashioned way. (OK, not with a quill, but you get the idea.) It wasn't until about 3 years ago that I fully transitioned to the laptop.

With the start of a new book, the idea of writing in a notebook to me once again. There's something so earthy and fresh....and dare I say, organic?....about penning chapters by hand. Plus I feel more connected with the work. The side benefit is that I don't suffer from WADS when I scrawl on paper. I don't know that I can write an entire book this way, but it's sure working for me now.

Do any of you write by hand, or are James Patterson and I the only ones? If not, do you have another quirky process while you create?

Hi Georgiana, I clicked over from Jill Kemerer's blog ... Yes, I write longhand, but not the actual manuscript or writing project going on. I always keep a separate journal for each manuscript or project, filled with my handwriting jotting down notes, thoughts, character development, that sort of thing. It makes for a nice reference, and I like combining the two like that, technology with pen and ink!

How cool is that writing in longhand! I write on paper too and sometimes even use a quill! (-; And talk about organic, try writing with ground stick ink, a quill on real vellum (animal skin)Shivers! I love office supplies and paper. I might have to blog about my off cut paper box.

Um, no on the longhand thing. I'd never be able to read my deplorable penmanship!

:)

My goodness, I LOVE that! Wish I could mail you quill and ink!!!

Nope. It's computer keys all the way for me.

I love meeting another writer! Thank you for stopping by today--I will be reading more and be back again. And I've done outlines by hand and cars, but not a whole book! I wouldn't be able to read my handwriting.

Hi Joanne! I'm glad you stopped by. I once read that the novelist Elizabeth George keeps a journal for each of her novels as well. You are in great company!

CJ, that is so cool! A quill :D I'd love to try that someday, but I'm not sure what ground stick ink is. Hmm.

Erica, mine used to be bad too, but the more I write the better it gets--the penmanship not the prose. LOL!!! OK, hopefully the prose is getting better too =P

Patti, the quill would be so fun, although I have to admit the clack of computer keys kinda gets me in the mood to write too!

Hi Terri! I'm glad you stopped by today :D Like you, I prefer to do the outlines/pre-work by hand. Not likely that I'll end up doing the entire book that way, but one never knows.....

I write by hand too. I can't think writing on the computer. I will write in a notebook and then put it on the computer.

Hi Andi! Yay...another notebooker! One thing I've noticed is that I am able to "clean up" the draft as I put in on the computer. I think we've got a good plan going :D

I haven't tried writing by hand because my thoughts always flow so much faster than I can write. But I do prefer to write out plot ideas, character ideas etc. on paper (probably because it's easier to keep the information right by my side to refer back to).

I prefer the computer, but use a notebook for...notes and plotting. And since your the office supply queen can you tell me WHY my sticky notes aren't sticking!!!!!

Sharon, that is a great reason to keep using the computer! I like having things written by my side too, for reference.

Gina, what kind of stickies do you have? OR, what are you trying to stick it on? Highly important questions in my analysis ;)
