This winter has been especially brutal, and I have a feeling we aren't quite done. One of the saddest things that happened was when the roof of the used bookstore collapsed (never mind the fact that I had a credit there!)

So we were driving by yesterday, and it looks like a war zone. The whole front wall is off now, and if you look super close you can see the packed out bookshelves....and the dozer ready to run it all down. ARGH! Couldn't they send someone in with a hardhat to save the books?! As I lamented, my daughter said, "Eh, don't worry. It's only the sci-fi section." {{Lol, she said it, not me. All you sci-fi fans out there please do not throw tomatoes!}}
I suppose most books do have a shelf life (pun intended) and they all must end up somewhere. While I like to keep as many as I can, I have to part with a few dozen every year, by giving them to a good home with an avid reader who will derive as much pleasure as I.
My question for you: what do you do with books when you are finished? Do you have a lavish library and can keep them all? Donate? Friends?

I first pass them on to my Aunt and then sometimes my grandmother might read one but since she does not like CF and that is the majority of what I read ...
Also I donate some to the library, keep some on my shelves, and post some on paperbackswap.
:)
Some of the hardcovers I keep on my shelves. But the rest might first make the rounds through the house, then I donate them to our libaray for their annual book sale. In a sense, that way, they help to fund new books coming into the library.
Oh my gosh! How did the roof cave in?! Hmm I usually end up keeping the books I love and know I'll want to read again. The others are donated to my local library, because I loved (and still love) libraries when I was growing up. Hours spent curled up there cemented my love for the written word and I want to share my books with others. I'm hoping to donate some children's books to the hospital soon.
I usually give some books to my mom and then donate some to my church library. I loved to keep them, but I always run out of room.
Brittanie, that is my situation also--the readers in my family do not like CF, but I have found a few people who eat it up!
Joanne, I tend to keep the hard covers also. Is that wrong? Hee hee.
Julie, in December we got 52" of snow in one week. Six businesses had their roofs collapse. Last year it happened too, and it was a different bookstore! Maybe by next snow season people will learn....
Jody, I never thought of asking our church if they have a library. How silly is that?
As much as I would love to keep every book I read, I don't have enough room in the doll house. Books as well as DVDs, VHS tapes are sent to the used book collection at the transfer station.
And sometimes, if it's a book that has been too well loved, I will alter it into a piece of art.
Making it into art is a great idea, CJ! We also have a doll house ;)
So sad. Poor book store!
I donate the books I've read (except for a select few I've deemed re-reads) to our RWA chapter's (MVRWA) book event. We invite the public to meet us and our pubbed authors, we bring food, and we all donate books for anyone to take. It's a lot of fun!
The roof collapsed on our Christian Bookstore this winter...but thankfully it was over the art and gift section and not the books! :)
I have bulging bookshelves. When I need to downsize, I usually give books away or put them in the church library.
I donate to friends. I keep a small number and of course the ones on my Kindle just sit there. I wish I had a home library lol. Of course when I was little I totally believed I would. *sigh* reality bites.
Jill, that sounds like a super fun event! That'd be something to look foward to every year.
Erica, it hurts my heart to think of the roof collapsing on a Christian bookstore!! LOL, only the gift section =P
T. Anne--you and I had the same childhood wish. I seriously thought I'd have this grand library. I'm with you on the reality bites on this one!
The ones I don't especially like, I either donate to a missions thrift store or to a Bible college library. The ones that I do like, I keep rotating among friends so I can keep my shelves under control. lol. I just had 3 people return books at once, though, so I need to loan some more out fast before the pile overtakes our study.

Oh, I'm sorry about the bookstore.
Sigh. Books clog our house. Really.
Stacks upon stacks in shelves. A basement littered with them. Surely they are mating.
PLUS many are adopted by libraries and friends.
When hubby grumbles, I just comment that they are far cheaper than fine antiques or designer clothes...
GREAT POST (as usual)
Patti
Jenness, you might have to come up with your own card cataglog system ;)
Patti, that is a great point! There are far worse things we could be into.
