HAVE YOU EVER....
....taken on one of your character's hobbies or interests?
This might sound a little weird, but every time I develop a new heroine, I start taking an interest in the things that interest her.
For example, when I was writing my second book, Honey Do Inc., the heroine did lots of household things. So did I. Coming up with new ways to run my household became somewhat of a hobby.
When I wrote my last novel, Fit for Love, the heroine was busting her butt to lose weight in a fitness boot camp. I rejoined the gym.
My next heroine might be a professional organizer....guess what I've been doing lately?
Now, it might be a chicken and egg situation. What I perceive as my heroine doing something and I follow after, is most likely my subconscious working, then my heroine following me. But it's still fun to notice the similiarities.
And get the closets organized.
Tell me I'm not a lame brain. Does this ever happen to you?

I haven't actually taken on a character's hobbies or traits, but have researched them to give them authenticity. In a sense, I've paid closer attention to them when I come across them, to learn more details.
If that's the case, I need to revise my character into a great houskeeper. My house has been a disaster as I've worked on this first draft!
I don't know that I do this with my own characters, but when I read Essie Summers romances, her heroines are always so domestic, I find myself cooking and cleaning more. :)
Is it any wonder that my family loves Essie too, though they've never read her books? LOL
Ha! I do the same thing. My novels are just my life in disguise a lot of times. No harm in that, right?
LOL! No, I've never done this before. Too funny. ;-)
Yes, I think I DO this, but I'd never thought of it. I'm kinda a chameleon type, so when I write of these brave people, I tend to adopt those traits. Hopefully just the good ones!

I would think you would need to know or thoroughly understand what your character does, hobbies, work. How can you make it real for the reader, if you don't?
BTW, my studio could use some organizing. Want to come over and play?
Looks like we have a mixed bag today :D
All I can say is, I'm glad my characters don't skydive.
I read through blogs so fast, that I guess I missed somewhere, that you'd published at least three books, if not more. Perhaps, I'll be able to find time to read one some day. :)
Oh Anita, how I wish I'd published three books! Those are just WIPS languishing on my hardrive ;)
I have published one--through a small press--called Table for One. The heroine in that is a stockbroker, which actually is my former occupation.
You mean you're not a super woman, i.e. raising kids, publishing book after book like Danielle Steel, reviewing books, maintaining a household, writing and reading blogs, etc? :)
Seriously, I'm impressed when anyone publishes their first book. Congratulations! I hope you have repeat successes. Actually, I'm also impressed by so many women (and men too) using blogs to confer with one another about WIPs. What a great source for learning and encouragement.
Aww, thanks, Anita! I love blog hopping and gleaning ideas and inspiration from others, too :D
