THE SHORTEST SIX WEEKS OF MY LIFE

As many of you know, I had my appendix out recently, and was told to stay away from all strenuous activity for six full weeks. I ranted and threw a fit, explaining to the doc how girthy I'd become if I waited that long to get back to my exercise routine.

Sadly, I found I enjoyed my new relaxed schedule, and six weeks flew by entirely too fast.

Now I have no excuse to sip my coffee and do the crossword puzzle, not when the treadmill beckons like a Siren. OK, it really doesn't, but my guilt prods me along.

This week my workout partner (she had to stop introducing me as her partner, because in a town like ours people get the wrong idea!) and I went to step aerobics and weight lifting class. Today I'm supposed to go to a new cardio class but I'm a little freaked. Might have to settle for a trot on the treadmill.

As computer-ish, artistic, writerly types, it's easy to fall into a sedentary routine. But please allow me to be the voice of guilt that prods you on.

What are you doing to stay healthy?

Walk, walk, and walk some more. I try to get in a couple miles most days, and find it so beneficial in many ways. It even helps my writing in that it's a good contemplation time, working out plot points, that sort of thing. And I'm looking forward to the fresh veggies of summer too :)

I started working out with my friend, Red, a fitness instructor. She's recovering from back surgery so she asked if I would like to work out doing her core program. We started yesterday. I'm sore today. To continue, I'll have The Young One hook up the Wii Fit in the sun room. Next week, Sensei Himself (soon to be 3rd degree black belt) will guide us through a T'ai Chi short form (which isn't short (-; )

Hahaha Partner!! That's hilarious. Well I'm glad you back into the routine. I know you'll feel better even though it kinda stinks! Excuses are often nice =) I need to start working out again but time....time such an issue for me right now. I can't do EVERYTHING and right now writing and making $ is more important than losing a few lbs. Sigh.

SO much, because I go nuts w/o exercise, and so does my dog Laura.

Jog, walk, yoga in front of TV set, stationary bike. I even tried a kick boxing DVD of a friend's.

LOVE TO MOVE!! Plus the gray matter gets energized....

Walking, weighing, watching what I eat. :)

LOL! I had to laugh when you said she had to stop introducing you as her partner. :)

I run three times a week (I'm almost up to 4 miles now!) and on the off days I do a Jillian Michaels home workout.

I work out using wii ea active and sometimes wii fit plus every day except sunday for 30-45 minutes. I watch my diet, but I do not diet (as demonstrated by eating tiramusu yesterday). I walk on average two times a week for a couple of miles. I began losing weight and this regement the day after Christmas. I've lost 20lbs. The other day I looked in the mirror and gasped...There were muscles there on my arm...I've never seen that before! :o) Still, I have approximately 60 lbs more to lose. Getting there. Don't lose your momentum. It's easy to kick a habit and much much harder to form one.

I joined the YMCA about a month ago. I love the classes - Zumba, pilates, sculpting, water aerobics.

Joanne, good for you working on your story while exercising. Now that's multi-tasking :D

CJ, I'd be totally intimidated to workout with a fitness instructor. You are brave!

Betsy, time is always the issue. Major issue! Thankfully for you, you don't have but a few pounds (really, do you have any?) to lose!

Patti, it really does get the gray matter energized. And you know, I find I'm less tired overall when I exercise consistantly, which also helps with gray matter :)

Erica, weighing is my least favorite thing, but oh so necessary to stay on track!

Hi Jennifer! Four miles? That's awesome! Don't ever stop because it's killer to get going again.

Thewritelife2, congratulations on the 20 pounds, that's great! I have about 40 pounds to go to start being in "healthy" range. Who makes those silly charts, anyway?

Julie, I have always wanted to try Zumba and pilates. Out of all the classes I've taken, those never worked into the schedule. Hmmmm....

I have to agree with Joanne. I walk (when my body allows it), I use that time in prayer and praise and then on the way back to the house, I begin working out the next area of my novel.

I rarely have time to get to the gym, so I huff it on my elliptical, do weights with the FIRM and just bought the Zumba home workout! Took the class at the gym and loved it! Now I can Samba and shake without anyone watching...except the kids who love to stare and laugh! Now if only my diet can get back under control!

Georgiana said...

Hi Joy! You bring up a great point--exercise time is good for praying. I need to remember that because a lot of the repetitious stuff is so mind numbing.

Gina and the samba! Love it :D Now I might need to get some videos, Zumba and Samba. Or maybe they are part of the same thing?

I walk thirty minutes every day on the treadmill and lift weights while I do!! Hope you feel 100% well!

Georgiana said...

Thanks, Terri! I do feel almost 100%. A little nervous doing crunches, but mostly I can participate.

Lifting weights on the treadmill? You are really coordinated!

Take care of yourself! I try to run or walk at the park. My kids love going there. That video is funny and scary! That really happened to my mom.

Georgiana said...

Oh, T. Anne! I can't believe that happened. Wow, was she ok? LOL, I always run this video when it shows how I feel about exercise ;)

My husband, Fred, and I walk marathons! We are heading over to Pittsburgh on Sunday (May 2) to do just that! Please pray for safe travels - and endurance! - for us!

I sadistically couldn't stop watching the tragedy on the treadmill! : )

Thanks a million for linking to my blog on your blog; you rock! I received an email today from a former stranger who'd visited my blog because of that!

Blessings -

I'm so glad to hear that, Andrea!

PS. I must be sadistic too, because I watch that silly clip over and over and over....

Back into running after a 20-year sabbatical. I'm doing the Couch to 5K plan again (C25K)

Run a bit, walk a bit. 9 week program to a 5K.

My homeschool friends on the Sonlight Forums had me create a set of podcasts to run to with Christian Indie music on them.

God's blessed that effort, thousands of folks have downloaded them to run the program. Shame the fat guy who created the tracks is now having to run the program again... I'm on week 6.

Hi Chris! Good for you running the Couch to 5k. I've heard of it and been curious--but haven't taken that leap yet.
