When I decided to be a judge for ACFW's Book of the Year contest, I vowed to cut back on titles for review. As a longtime fan of the Bugman series by Tim Downs, I couldn't resist when Thomas Nelson offered Wonders Never Cease.
A scheming nurse, a bloodsucking agent, a fading starlett, a desperate mother, and a girl who sees angels comprise a colorful cast of characters. Half the time we're in the POV of characters we love to hate, as they concoct a plan to convince a star she's seen an angel while in a coma, and write a bestseller to unknowingly make the schemers rich. Meanwhile, a little girl is having encounters that make the adults around her question her sanity.
Deeper questions about faith, and being willing to believe, are laced through this quirky story. And yet, the faith element is subtle and doesn't overpower the story. This is a perfect example of "suspension of disbelief," and though some aspects of the end are not neatly tied up, the overall read is quite satisfying.
Wonders Never Cease is a complete departure from what I've come to know as a Tim Downs novel, but it's absolutely a page-turner, and I hope to see more stories like this.
BLURB:
"It's true what they say, you know: If you talk to God, you're religious; but if you hear from God, you're schizophrenic."When a car accident leaves a famous movie star in a coma, nurse Kemp McAvoy thinks he has found his ticket to the life he's always wanted. As a med school dropout who was on his way to becoming an anesthesiologist, Kemp has the knowledge to carry off the crazy plan he concocts: adjust the star's medication each night and pretend to be a heavenly visitor giving her messages. He recruits her agent and a down-and-out publisher to make sure the messages will become the next spiritual bestseller and make them all rich. But his girlfriend's daughter, Leah, keeps telling people that she is seeing angels, and her mother and her teachers are all afraid that something is wrong.
Before it's all over, they'll all learn a few things about angels, love, and hope.

It sounds like a good read, with lots going on beneath the surface. Almost where one's actions are going to change the course of someone else's. A busy plot line going on here!
I read my first bugman novel a few weeks ago and loved it! I can't wait to get my hands on more.
Maybe he'll be signing some at the ACFW conference...
Joanne, I breezed through this book in just over 24 hours (fast for me!) Lots going on and I didn't want to miss a thing.
Erica, I LOVE LOVE LOVE the Bugman novels. This is NOTHING like it, but the use of hooks and suspense (even though this isn't suspense) really propels you through it. I hope he signs the books! I'm really excited to hear what he has to say.
Wow. Thanks for the recommendation, Georgiana!
Just finished Rooms. Was soooo thought-provoking.
