I SURVIVED THE GERM-INFESTED, OVERCROWDED, ULTRA PUBLIC SPECTACLE KNOWN AS....
......the County Fair. {insert full body shudder}
Yesterday morning my husband and youngest daughter woke up as the sun barely slid over the horizon, and within in minutes were dressed and ready to go. Soon, the middle child was ready to join in the fun. Oldest precious daughter was not quite as anxious, but still wanted to get into the mix of things.
The only one dragging behind happened to be the one who usually rushes everyone out the door--me.
There's just something about the dust and noise and germs that makes me cringe every time the fair comes to town. Being a good sport, I trudge along, if only to make sure hubby and oldest daughter don't load the littles onto the Gravitron or other vominator-type rides they aren't ready for.
Maybe it all comes down to previous bad experiences. You see, when I was about 4 or 5, I was injured because a ride operator started the ride before I was sitting and I mashed my forehead. Or maybe it was because while pregnant with my middle child I was so enormous I got stuck in the bathroom stall. In any case, I could easily take a pass, but I go year after year....after year....because I'm a mom.
The day turned out well, and we had fun with grandma and grandpa taking pictures of every turn of every ride the kids went on. Of course, I forced everyone to have a shower and scrub off the fair germs after the whole thing was over.
Favorite ride for the kidlets: Aqua Bubble
Favorite snack for me: deep fried cheesecake
How about you and the county fair: love it or hate it?

Sadly, I haven't been to the county fair since they started charging an admission price about five years ago. It used to be the Olmsted County FREE Fair...I miss the good old days.

County Fair Cheapskate
Not a fan, though I love doughboys (elephant ears? fried dough with powdered sugar)
LOL, Erica! You are SO right. I totally forgot to mention that. For a family of 5, we spent well over $100 yesterday, and believe me dear hubby was determined to get. our. money's. worth. LONG after 2/5 of us were ready to leave, we stayed for ride after ride after ride.
CJ, my hubby LOVES those too. In fact, every time I make fry bread he transforms it into elephant ears. Yummy!
Georgiana, we are on the same merry-go-round, gulp, on this one.
Cannot STOMACH them.
See you...like next week???!!
Blessings,
Patti
I love our State Fair. I ride some rides but I love the food. :)
Patti, I am SO excited to meet you in person!
Brittanie, the food really is good. And I don't feel bad indulging because it's only once a year ;)
It's all about the giant corndogs. Our fair has turned somewhat violent and usually has a shooting at least once at night during the weeks it's here so we don't typically go anymore. Not worth the $ and I don't trust fair rides safety AT ALL. I just don't see them paying the carnies enough to care its all done right. Makes me nervous. But I'm a worrywart =P
You're so right! I totally don't trust anyone for these rides.
LOL, the kids ate corn dogs, so you share a fave with them :D
For some reason, my computer is not showing the comments for your post on The Thorn, so I'm leaving it here. :)
Thanks for bringing Beverly Lewis back to my attention. I read the trilogy that starts with The Shunning, too, and thoroughly enjoyed it. Interestingly, my 12 year old daughter read her pre-teen books a year ago and loved them so much that I had to see what was so good about the author.
I hope to read more of her work soon...after I read some other stuff that has piled up.
Hi Anita! I'm not familiar with B.L.'s pre-teen books. I will have to get a hold of those. Thanks!
